PV-1 type of plane flown by Chuck Gwinn

Pilot Chuck Gwinn, on a routine submarine patrol, while trying to fix an antennae problem at the back of the plane, spots an oil slick. Gwinn gets back into the pilot seat and dives down close to the water. As he prepares to do a bombing run, he sees "heads bobbing in the water." He has accidentally discovered the USS Indianapolis Survivors. Gwinn radios his base and asks for immediate assistance. It's the first time anybody in the Navy knew the Indianapolis had sunk. After the rescue, the survivors referred to Gwinn as "Our angel."
