Japanese Submarine, I-58, commanded by Mochitsura Hashimoto

Japanese Submarine, I-58, commanded by Mochitsura Hashimoto, just after midnight on July 30th, 1945, fired 6 torpedoes, two of which hit the USS Indianapolis, causing massive explosions and damage. The Indy sunk in 12 minutes. Several books report that Hashimoto surfaced his sub some time after he sank the Indy, trying to get confirmation on what type of ship he had just sunk. He found nothing in the darkness after midnight. Lt. Erwin Hensch reported in his interview for this podcast that he saw a "red light" off in the distance shortly after the sinking. He suspects what he saw was submarine I-58 looking for evidence of the sinking. Hensch states he is glad I-58 never saw the survivors as he feared they would be killed.
